HBO announces alternate history drama
July 20, 2017

HBO announced that an alternate reality history drama entitled 'Confederates', from the creators of Game of Thrones, will be in the works. The announcement comes on the heels of the premiere of the wildly successful miniseries' seventh season.
Not much was released other than that the show will take place in an alternate reality where the southern states successfully seceded. In this alternate reality, more civil wars are coming. It's not clear whether the alternate reality will be set in the present, or some kind of take on an entirely different twentieth century.
The show will feature a diverse group of characters living on both sides of "a Mason-Dixon Demilitarized Zone – freedom fighters, slave hunters, politicians, abolitionists, journalists, the executives of a slave-holding conglomerate and the families of people in their thrall." Source
The alternate history genre usually starts with a series of "what if's?" Then the story can become a full blown fantasy, continue with historic theories of ranging complexity or a combination of both. It remains to be seen what value the creators are placing on "what if" scenarios that usually define the genre.
